The things we leave unfinished
Rebecca’s letter to readers
The Things We Leave Unfinished Hardcover is now available!
This is one of Rebecca’s favorite novels she has written and is so excited to see it in hardcover. It is a jacket-less foiled hardcase with an all new cover design, stenciled edges, custom endpapers with original art, and a letter from her to all of you. However, the only new content is the letter, which you can find below!
There are signed copies available online and in stores, while supplies last.
Dear Reader,
Right now, you’re holding my favorite book I’ve ever written. Most people would think my favorite would be Fourth Wing, but my heart truly belongs to The Things We Leave Unfinished.
Early in the pandemic, I found myself enchanted by a film adaptation of a Jane Austen novel she never finished called Sanditon. By the eighth and final episode of the season, I was livid. What do you mean our heroine and hero aren’t off living their happily ever after? Isn’t that the unspoken promise of a Jane Austen story? Don’t worry, there are two more seasons now, but back in 2020, my brain started to spin.
As a romance author, I have a duty to my readers to deliver a happy-ever-after when writing in that genre. But what would happen if I left a work unfinished, and why would I ever not finish a story? That’s the question that sparked this novel. From there, I was down the rabbit hole, consumed by a love story that starts in World War Two Britain and spans across generations into modern day.
I love this book because it sounds like Billie Holliday and feels like a Colorado sunset. It bears witness to a love that’s held together by letters during wartime, just like my own marriage has been. It speaks to the devotion between sisters, the obligations we take on for family and the ones we let go of in the name of self-preservation. It’s my favorite because I wrote it during one of the most difficult times of my life, and though I can still feel that weight in every word, it’s the hope and promise that the right love can bring out the best in all of us that has stayed with me all these years later.
I hope you love it just as much as I do.
XOXO,
Rebecca
