Dear Readers,
Thank you so much for picking up this deluxe, hardcover edition of THE LAST LETTER!
This book means so much to me for so many reasons. It’s also known as the saddest
book I’ve ever written, so if you’re still at the store, maybe grab some tissues.
While my husband was serving in the military, two families close to us went through
childhood cancer diagnoses. It struck me as being so unfair for these kids to go through
the unimaginable, as I watched their parents move heaven and earth in their
fight.
While writing THE LAST LETTER, I called both of these friends and asked them what I
needed to get right in this book. I asked what they would say to everyone if they could.
I’m forever grateful to those women for inviting me inside their family struggles and
opening my eyes to a world where prognosis doesn’t always equal outcome.
One of my friends went above and beyond, letting me into her son’s treatment logs,
which became the timeline for THE LAST LETTER. I strove to make the book as
accurate as possible, to do justice to these kids who fight with everything they have. I’m
forever grateful for Ashton’s strength and grace. She answered every question, helped
me understand the countless facets of emotions she and others have gone through.
She walked me through the months of treatment, the setbacks, the victories, the
hardships. I spent months pouring over blogs where parents detailed their children’s
experiences, insurance fights, treatment possibilities, and countless hours sobbing over
their outcomes, both the spectacular and the tragic. All of these emotions found their
way into this book.
It’s been seven years since I wrote The Last Letter, and Beckett, Ella, Colt, and Maisie
are still with me.
I hope they stay with you, too.
